Full Description

I am a chinese born and raised in Singapore. I grew up with the love to sing and play instruments.

Up until my 20’s, I lived with my parents, two sisters, grandparents and uncle who happen to be down syndrome. Also, I was born with a small disability of not being able to smell. Even though it is nothing compared to many others, but I am glad that because of this tiny disability, I was able to better empathize what others are going through.

I strongly believe that it was because of my family environment who shaped me to be who I am, one who really wishes to give hope to people of less fortunate or special needs by teaching them the skill of playing piano no matter how impossible it may be.

I got re-located in Durham NC USA from 2012-2016. I was fortunate to be able to teach at the US and have a wide range of students with different culture and personality. To see them improve over the years, it is the most rewarding result a teacher could ever ask for.

Piano Education
I was one of the fortunate kid who get to start learning piano since I was four. I was fortunate enough to have a great passionate teacher to learn from. She had trained me and encouraged me through my low self esteem as I was growing up. She was also very generous in getting me ready to be a piano teacher by sharing her experiences and equip me with teaching tools. Going through all the ups and down allowed me to further understand student’s learning mentality and helped in achieving my goal for all my students which is for them to appreciate all kinds of music and the belief that they can achieve anything they set their mind to it. Learning piano is not just about the skills of playing piano, but also the patience, determination and self confidence to accomplish a song (task). This skill will be useful in all works of life.

I grew loving all types of music but mainly classically trained. So I mainly focus on classical and traditional method but believes that all lessons should be tailored for each individual. I went through the ABRSM (Associate Board of Royal School of Music) examination board system, finishing Grade 8 in Piano Practical in the year 2004. I went on to continue my piano education by preparing DipABRSM in Teaching and Trinity Guildhall Diploma in Performance. In year 2011, I was Awarded Trinity Guildhall Level 4 Associate Diploma in Music Performance (ATCL Recital). I performed in various piano events and competition since young, and continuing on my journey on professional development for the benefit of my students.

Teaching Experience
I started teaching piano in 2004 before I started my college years. I have met many students and taught in many different settings such as private music schools, elementary school, pre-schools, private studios in my house in groups or individually and travelling to student’s place. My student’s age range from 4 – 60+.

When I was teaching in Singapore(2004-2011), my students whom I have taught progressed over the years, some were sent to performance and competition and all of my student manage to achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction in ABRSM graded exam range from grade 1 – 7. Most importantly, my students have all learn to appreciate and love music.

From 2011-2016, I got relocated to Durham NC USA and started teaching in 2012 – 2016. The environment is very different, therefore student’s goal are very different too. For example, one of my student was only interested in a specific song that they have heard. So I will use the song to teach them techniques through the song and give them tips as to how to practice. Other times, students are interested to play and sing or compose pop songs, I would teach them chords and chord progression. There are also students who are motivated to play more classical songs, I would make sure they are exposed to all era’s of music. Instead of exam based goals, I would hold annual student recital for student to showcase their hard work after a year of diligent practice and we would celebrate with a pot luck. In the near future, I hope to find more “stage” locally for my students to perform. This is to motivate them to practice and realize what they can achieve.

Currently, I am back in Singapore for good and would love to continue spreading my passion for music. I am looking forward to use the experience that I have gained in the past decade on my new students.

Lessons will be held weekly from 30, 45, 60 minutes (depending on level and age). Flexible schedule and reasonable lesson fees starting from $130/month. Lessons can be held in groups of 2-4 or individually. There will be a trial lesson available for any who are interested. Classes are located near Punggol MRT at Punggol Waterway Terrace 1.
